The Truth about Showing up As Your Authentic Self in an Interview

July 18, 2014/in Being True To Yourself, Blog, Career, Career Coaching, Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone/by Melissa Dawn

I keep hearing my clients saying, “I have this interview that I need to prepare for…I need to impress the interviewer…I know this is what they want to hear…this is how I feel I need to act and what I should say… in order to land the job…”

I can hear the stress in their voice. I remember feeling that same way…I was wanting a certain job so badly, and being so eager to please and make a great impression…. But now, I know better…And I will share my insights with you.

The first thing I tell my clients when I see them stressing is “whoa……take a deep breath…..just remember, you are interviewing the interviewer as much as they are interviewing you!

It’s a shift from reaching of trying to be something that you think they want…VERSUS…Just being yourself and seeing how your talents and strengths authentically contribute to the company.

Either your strengths and talents line up with that company, or, they don’t. If they don’t, then don’t worry about it. It just means that it’s not the right job for you. But if they do, then all you need to do is…
SHOW UP AS YOUR TRUE AUTHENTIC SELF!

How do YOU do that?

By grounding yourself in you. By saying what YOU truly really feel and showing how your experience and skill set is a great fit for the role you are interviewing for.

When you are doing that, you are simply speaking from a place of your own truth. And when you do that, you have nothing to worry about. You just authentically communicate how you can contribute and they either want you, or they don’t. But either way, it’s standing in your own power. And to me, that’s the truth about showing up as your authentic self in an interview.

It’s no secret that leaders value authenticity in the workplace. In many forward-thinking companies, the kind of authenticity I am talking about is embraced.

So stop stressing about what the interviewer will think of you and instead focus on your strengths and talents, and how to communicate those authentically.

If you missed my article on, “How to Align Your Life Purpose With Your Career,” you may want to check it out prior to the interview, to ensure this career possibility is aligned with the direction you are moving towards.

If you truly feel this potential opportunity is aligned with your needs, life purpose and strengths, then put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes and look for what is a genuine win-win for you both.

Remember to stay positive, smile, and be sincere.
Take pride in you, show your passion.

Showing up as your true authentic self, knowing who you are and what you want, will win the right employer’s heart. Otherwise, you may find yourself in an unhappy situation in a few months’ time and going through this whole process again…

Here is to you being the CEO of your life!
